CMSD (Canine Multiple System Degeneration)

Test number: 8575 (this test number replaces the old 8575D)
Gene: CMSD
Price: £ 48.00 (including VAT)
Breeds
Chinese Crested , Kerry Blue Terrier .
The Disease
Canine multiple system degeneration (CMSD) is an inherited movement disorder that occurs in both the Chinese Crested and Kerry Blue Terrier. Affected dogs develop normally during the first three to six months of life. Then cerebellar ataxia occurs causing movement disorders affecting the head at first, and later the legs. Due to a continually advancing instability of the body, the dog falls frequently. Affected dogs must be euthanized no later than one to two years of age. Since this disease is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, DNA testing can, with subsequent controlled breeding, insure that affected animals are not born.
Trait of Inheritance
Autosomal recessive

Inheritance : AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE trait

Clear

Genotype: N / N [ Homozygous normal ]

The dog is noncarrier of the mutant gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop CMSD (Canine Multiple System Degeneration). The dog will never pass the mutation to its offspring, and therefore it can be bred to any other dog.

Carrier

Genotype: N / CMSD [ Heterozygous ]

The dog carries one copy of the mutant gene and one copy of the normal gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop CMSD (Canine Multiple System Degeneration) but since it carries the mutant gene, it can pass it on to its offspring with the probability of 50%.

Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs.

Avoid breeding carrier to carrier because 25% of their offspring is expected to be affected (see table above)

Affected

Genotype: CMSD / CMSD [ Homozygous mutant ]

The dog carries two copies of the mutant gene and therefore it will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring.

The dog is likely to develop CMSD (Canine Multiple System Degeneration) and will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring
