Canine Cyclic Neutropenia (Gray Collie Syndrome)

Gene: GCS
Price: £ 48.00 (including VAT)
Breeds
Rough Collie , Smooth Collie .
The Disease
Canine Cyclic Neutropenia is a genetic disorder that affects the stem cells, which are located in the bone marrow and are responsible for developing all blood cells in the body. This disorder leads to cyclic fluctuation in the number of blood cells, the number of the neutrophil blood cells falls down sharply every 10 to 12 days, and then it returns to normal. Affected puppies look weaker and smaller than their litter siblings and have a noticeable pale gray, pinkish gray or beige coat colour. Due to the changing number of blood cells, the puppies become susceptible to all sorts of infections and by the age of 10 to 12 weeks they start exhibiting various clinical signs such as fever, diarrhoea, eye and/or respiratory infections. Puppies rarely live beyond the age of 3 years and usually die within few weeks after birth.
Trait of Inheritance
The disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive trait. Both the parents must carry the abnormal gene for their puppies to be affected. Carrier dogs do not manifest the disease; however they can spread the abnormal gene to the next generations. Therefore reliable information of dogs that do not carry abnormal genes is the key to controlling this disease.

Clear

Genotype: N / N [ Homozygous normal ]

The dog is noncarrier of the mutant gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Canine Cyclic Neutropenia (Gray Collie Syndrome). The dog will never pass the mutation to its offspring, and therefore it can be bred to any other dog.

Carrier

Genotype: N / GCS [ Heterozygous ]

The dog carries one copy of the mutant gene and one copy of the normal gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Canine Cyclic Neutropenia (Gray Collie Syndrome) but since it carries the mutant gene, it can pass it on to its offspring with the probability of 50%.

Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs.

Avoid breeding carrier to carrier because 25% of their offspring is expected to be affected (see table above)

Affected

Genotype: GCS / GCS [ Homozygous mutant ]

The dog carries two copies of the mutant gene and therefore it will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring.

The dog is likely to develop Canine Cyclic Neutropenia (Gray Collie Syndrome) and will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring
