Acrodermatitis enteropathica in Felis catus

Test number: 8763
Gene: AE
Price: £ 48.00 (including VAT)
Breed
Turkish Van .
The Disease
Acrodermatitis Enteropathica ( AE ) is an inherited disease that has been reported in the Turkish Van cat breed. The disease was characterised by severe signs of skin disease, diarrhea, and systemic signs of stunted growth at 6 weeks of age. Massive secondary infections of the skin lesions evolved. Histopathological examinations showed a mild to moderate hyperplastic epidermis, covered by a thick layer of laminar to compact, mostly parakeratotic keratin. The dermis was infiltrated with moderate amounts of lymphocytes and plasma cells.
Trait of Inheritance
Autosomal recessive mode of inheritance

Inheritance : AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE trait

Clear

Genotype: N / N [ Homozygous normal ]

The cat is noncarrier of the mutant gene.

It is very unlikely that the cat will develop Acrodermatitis enteropathica in Felis catus. The cat will never pass the mutation to its offspring, and therefore it can be bred to any other cat.

Carrier

Genotype: N / AE [ Heterozygous ]

The cat carries one copy of the mutant gene and one copy of the normal gene.

It is very unlikely that the cat will develop Acrodermatitis enteropathica in Felis catus but since it carries the mutant gene, it can pass it on to its offspring with the probability of 50%.

Carriers should only be bred to clear cats.

Avoid breeding carrier to carrier because 25% of their offspring is expected to be affected (see table above)

Affected

Genotype: AE / AE [ Homozygous mutant ]

The cat carries two copies of the mutant gene and therefore it will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring.

The cat is likely to develop Acrodermatitis enteropathica in Felis catus and will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring
Description

The disease is caused by a mutation in the SLC39A4 gene
