Description |

Congenital fibrinogen disorders are very rare bleeding disorders affecting dogs. They are three types:
- deficiency (hypofibrinogenemia), or
- absence of fibrinogen (afibrinogenemia),
- or normal or decreased levels of a dysfunctional fibrinogen (dysfibrinogenemia or hypodysfibrinogenemia).
Scientists have been able to identify a variant that is very likely associated with cases of severe bleeding due to afibrinogenemia in a small family of Dachshunds, however, it is thought that this mutation has already been spread in Dachshunds through carriers before cases were ascertained. Genetic testing allows selective breeding to prevent afibrinogenemia-affected puppies in the future.
