The Disease
The disease has been identified in one family of Dutch Shepherd.
Inflammatory myopathy (myositis) is inherited disease affecting the Dutch Shepherd breed and it is characterised muscle tremors, pelvic limb stiffness, progressive weakness, and severe muscle atrophy. Symptoms begin at 3 – 9 months, and all affected dogs were euthanized prior to 2 years of age due to painful muscular degeneration. Scientists at the University of Minnesota and the University of California have identified a mutation within a disease-associated mitochondrial transporter gene, and all affected dogs have two copies of this mutation. The disease is caused by a pathological variant in the SLC25A12 gene, and a test is available now at Laboklin.
