Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity (TLI) Test in Dogs and Cats
The Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity (TLI) test is used to assess exocrine pancreatic function in dogs and cats. It measures trypsinogen, a precursor enzyme produced by the pancreas, which normally leaks into the bloodstream.
Uses of the TLI Test
- Diagnosis of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) – Low TLI levels indicate EPI, where the pancreas fails to produce enough digestive enzymes.
- Pancreatitis Detection – Elevated TLI levels may suggest pancreatitis, though other tests like canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (cPLI) are more reliable.
- Small Intestinal Disease Considerations – EPI can affect vitamin B12 and folate absorption, so TLI is often tested alongside these markers.
How the Test Works
- Requires a fasting blood sample (typically 8–12 hours of fasting).
- Results help determine pancreatic function and guide treatment decisions.
