Fractional excretion (FE) test in horses
This test evaluates the fractional excretion (FE) of key electrolytes in equine urine and serum to assess renal tubular function. It supports early detection and characterization of tubular dysfunction.
- The fractional excretion (FE) of sodium (Na), potassium (K), phosphate (P), and chloride (Cl) is examined.
- Electrolyte excretion is related to creatinine excretion (with GFR approximated by excretion), allowing calculation of FE values.
- FE is used to diagnose dysfunction of the renal tubules.
- In horses with healthy kidneys, electrolyte excretion is regulated by glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption.
- If tubular reabsorption fails, the FE of one or more electrolytes typically increases.
